Accompanying family member: Starting a small business in Germany?

Frage

I am living in Germany on dependant visa with my husband. My husband is holding a blue card and has a permanent job here in Germany. I want to convert my hobby into small business. I would like to start a Henna Tattoo business from my home, so that I can paint henna Tattoo for 2-3 people in a week. It is a very small thing to start and I might earn 250 -300 Euros a month only. Can you please answer the following questions? 1. Do I need a license to do this very small business form my home? If yes, then which kind (Gewerbetreibender oder Freiberufler)? 2. How much does it cost inclusive all Insurances?

Antwort

First of all: as an accompanying family member of a Blue Card Holder you are granted a residence permit entitling you an unrestricted right to take up an employment in Germany, this also includes setting up a business in Germany. (Read more: www.make-it-in-germany.com)

Besides, in Germany, there are two ways of setting up a business: You are either self-employed (“Gewerbetreibender”), or you are a freelancer (“Freiberufler”). You do not get a choice in this matter - it depends on your profession. Being self-employed or a freelancer makes a difference with regard to certain formalities and also has an impact in your company’s legal structure. (Read more: www.make-it-in-germany.com)
